Cawley was convicted of murder.
The authorities of the American city of Simi valley has decided on the payment of resident Craig Cowley 21 million dollars for wrongful imprisonment, which he spent 39 years.
Cawley was convicted of killing a woman and her 4-year-old son in 1978. Protection of American with a DNA test proved his innocence, and in 2017 Cowley was pardoned.
“Although no amount of money can compensate for what happened to Mr. Cowley, the resolution of this case is the right decision for him and our community,” – said the representative of the city authorities.
Of the 21 million dollars the city will pay approximately 4.9 million, the remaining amount will be covered from other sources, including insurance.
